Day 20: The Ant and the Elephant
God’s children should be bold. Take the parents of Moses for example,
“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command” (Heb. 11:23).
Just think of what that involved. The Egyptian state, with Pharaoh at its head, had made it illegal to keep a male Hebrew baby. By law, such children were to be killed at birth. The panic and horror of the Hebrews must have been palpable as soldiers moved around the city to carry out this murderous order. What terror and grief there must have been!
Then Moses was born. His parents looked upon their lovely son, and they knew they could not, and never would, allow him to be killed. They decided to defy the law and hide the baby. “By faith … they were not afraid.” Officers of the law were around, and their footsteps were heard stopping at their very door, seeking the child’s life! Who would not shake in their shoes if armed men were waiting, ready to kill their baby? Yet “they were not afraid.” Why not? Were they unnatural, unfeeling? No, they were very good parents. There was just one reason why they did not quiver or panic – they had faith in the Almighty God! True, the situation was impossible. Their faith looked naive and foolish. Nevertheless, the situation was exactly what God likes: “For with God nothing will be impossible” (Luke 1:37).
When things are impossible, faith is the answer. Faith is not just for the possible – that is not faith at all. The mightiest resource in the universe is the arm of God. Some can only believe God when it is for something “reasonable,” something that can be managed. However, Paul wrote, “We … have no confidence in the flesh” (Phil. 3:3), that is, in our own schemes.
I love to illustrate faith in a big God with the delightful African story of the elephant and the ant. An elephant crossed a shaky bridge, and a tiny ant sat on the elephant, just behind the huge animal’s ear. The bridge shook as they crossed, and when they were safely on the other side, the ant said to the elephant, “My word! We made that bridge swing all right, didn’t we?” This is the relationship we have with God when we rest on Him. He carries us!
“For from days of old they have not heard or perceived by ear, nor has the eye seen a God besides You, Who acts in behalf of the one who waits for Him” (Isaiah 46:4).
He makes the bridge swing.He puts His weight behind us and on our side. He builds your home, your church, and your business. He heals you; He guides you; He protects you; He carries you! The Lord always leads you to triumph! In Him, we find the impossible possible. Hallelujah!
